The ancients had key roles in their communities. Each held a piece of society in their grasp. None more important the other. From what I’ve found, I’ve discerned those “job descriptions:”
The warrior was the guardian and kept the others safe.
The healer made sure that the community remained healthy.
The storyteller was equal parts historian, entertainer and spokesperson.
Not a bad leadership team. Be nice to see that again in these weird times. But I digress.
As I work my way through this third act, I’m seeing that the storyteller position might have been earned and taken on by more senior members of the community. They had the perspective of age, time and the ability to make decisions based upon knowledge and comparison. They were the balance of power with the healer and warrior. This ensured that the community didn’t become too warlike or too consumed with themselves.
This is one way of saying that stories, the exchange of ideas and communication are the keys to a balanced society. Don’t forget those who tell our stories—and be sure and share yours.
Telling stories helps connect us as we realize we all have more in common than we used to think
